Product research is the single most important step in Amazon FBA — and the one most beginners get wrong.
I've seen sellers spend months and thousands of dollars on a product only to discover the market is saturated, the margins are razor-thin, or the product has some fatal flaw that only shows up after the first shipment.
After years of doing product research for clients and myself, I've developed a framework that consistently finds products with 40%+ profit margins and sustainable demand. Here's the exact process.
The 6-Filter Framework
I run every product idea through 6 filters. If a product fails even one, I skip it.
Filter 1: Demand & Sales Velocity
Requirements:
- Top 10 listings sell 300+ units/month each
- Top 3 listings sell 1,000+ units/month combined
- Product has consistent sales (not seasonal spikes)
- Steady rank history over 12 months
Tools I use:
- Helium 10 — Black Box for broad search, Xray for listing details
- Jungle Scout — Product Database with historical data
- Keepa — Price and rank history charts
Look for keywords where the top 10 listings have 300-1,000 reviews. Too few reviews = low demand. Too many reviews = saturated market.
Filter 2: Competition Analysis
Requirements:
- Top 3 listings have under 500 reviews
- Top 3 listings have under 4.5 star rating (room to improve)
- No brand dominates the market (no single seller with 5+ top products)
- Listing quality is average or poor (better photos = competitive advantage)
Red flags:
- Top listings have 5,000+ reviews each
- Reviews are mostly from the last 6 months (means a big brand just launched)
- Multiple listings from same brand
- Amazon Basics is in the top 5
You're not looking for a market with no competition. You're looking for a market where the competition is lazy.
Filter 3: Profit Margin
Requirements:
- Retail price: $20-$70 (sweet spot)
- Product cost: 25-30% of retail price
- FBA fees: 15-20% of retail price
- Shipping: 10-15% of retail price
- Net margin: 30%+ after all costs
Example: A product that sells for $30
- Product cost: $8 (27%)
- FBA fees: $5 (17%)
- Shipping: $3 (10%)
- PPC (ads): $3 (10%)
- Net profit: $11 (37%) ✓
If a product can't hit 30% net margin, skip it. You'll waste your time.
Filter 4: Product Characteristics
Requirements:
- Small and lightweight (under 2 lbs)
- Not fragile or electronic
- Not seasonal (sells year-round)
- Not gated (no category restrictions)
- No brand/patent issues
- Simple to manufacture
What to avoid:
- Anything with batteries (extra compliance)
- Liquids, chemicals, or cosmetics (FBA restrictions)
- Medical devices (regulatory headaches)
- Branded items (trademark lawsuits)
- Large furniture or bulky items (huge FBA fees)
Filter 5: Differentiation Potential
Requirements:
- You can add a feature no one else has
- You can improve packaging or design
- You can bundle with a complementary item
- You can offer a size/color variant no one else offers
Real example: Someone sells kitchen knives. The market is saturated. But if you add a magnetic strip for storage, or bundle with a sharpener, or use eco-friendly packaging — now you're different. Now you can charge more.
Filter 6: Supplier Viability
Requirements:
- 3+ suppliers found on Alibaba with good ratings
- Sample ordered and tested
- Price negotiated to hit 25% of retail
- Manufacturer willing to customize (logo, packaging, etc.)
- Production time 15-30 days
- Minimum order quantity (MOQ) reasonable (under 500 units)
Red flags:
- Only 1-2 suppliers (risk of being cutoff)
- MOQ over 1,000 units (too much risk)
- Refuses customization (means they're not flexible)
- No reviews or new seller (scam risk)
The Full Workflow
Here's the step-by-step process I follow for every product:
Day 1-2: Brainstorm
List 20-30 product ideas from everyday life, trending categories, or problems you have.
Day 3-5: Filter
Use Helium 10 Black Box to filter down to 5-10 candidates that pass Filters 1-2.
Day 6-7: Deep Analysis
Analyze each candidate for Filter 3 (margin) and Filter 4 (characteristics).
Week 2: Supplier Search
Contact 5+ suppliers per product. Order samples from top 3.
Week 3-4: Test & Decide
Test samples. Verify quality. Calculate actual margins. Pick the winner.
Week 5-6: Launch Preparation
Negotiate price, order inventory, create listing, prepare for launch.

Common Product Research Mistakes
- Chasing trends — Trending products peak fast. By the time you launch, the trend is dead.
- Ignoring FBA fees — A "great margin" disappears after fees.
- Skipping samples — Never order inventory without testing samples first.
- Choosing saturated categories — Phone cases, kitchen gadgets, fitness gear. Too many sellers.
- Not differentiating — Selling the same generic product means competing on price only.
- Ignoring IP issues — Copyright/trademark violations get accounts suspended.
Real Example From My Portfolio
For one client, I ran this exact framework. We found a home organization product:
- Demand: Top 10 sell 4,000+ units/month
- Competition: Top 3 have 200-400 reviews, 4.3 stars
- Margin: $32 retail, $9 cost, 42% net margin
- Characteristics: Small, lightweight, year-round
- Differentiation: Added premium packaging + brand logo
- Supplier: 4 vetted suppliers, MOQ 300 units, customizable
Result: First month $2,800 revenue, 40% net profit. By month 3, the product was profitable enough to fund inventory for a second product.
